Restriction of international travels in North Korea North Korean citizens face violence and harsh punishment for attempting unauthorized leave the country to travel, so it is no surprise that international travel is mostly unheard of for an average individual in North Korea. The government maintains authority and management over the lives of not only the population as a whole, but even the individuals, who manage the country as people in power fear exposure to the outside world. The state allows travel and exposure only to a select few individuals in power and high-ranking officials, for example, diplomats and athletes, because the state comprehensively understands the risks of migration and the impact a citizen could have after leaving the boundary of the country.
